OK, now i am close to tears. wonder why? coz i came back from the excursion for the bio project and read a book. now, i completed the book and am feeling like crying coz the story is so sad. wonder what the book is? it is the book MY SISTER'S KEEPER, by Jodi Picoult. it was the book i was talking about in my previous post. since i like the book so much, i am going to write the whole story here.
disclaimer - don't read this. it is a spoiler. read my previous post for a gist of the story. i would rather you not read this post but to read the book. so don't read this! read the book! but if you are too lazy, well then, just read this
*clears throat*
Intro:
like i told you in my previous post, this book is about a girl called Kate, who suffers from a very aggressive form of leukemia. when her parents learn about it, they decide to genetically modify an embryo and give birth to her so that she will be perfect match as a donor for Kate. the girl who is born is called Anna. whenever Kate has a relapse, Anna donates her blood, and once she even donated her bone marrow.
Development:
However, now, Anna has grown up to be 13 years old and being a teenager, she begin to doubt about her existence, whether it is for herself or for Kate. So she takes a life-changing decision. she decides to file lawsuit against her parents for medical emancipation, as now Kate's kidney has failed and they are asking her to donate a kidney. she hires an attorney, campbell and they fight the case. (as you read about the court case you are forced to think for yourself and wonder whether Anna should have rights to her own body and in the course, cause the death of a sister she loves or whether she should just let her existence revolve around that of Kate and whether or not she have her own life.
Climax:
as they fight the case, one day, when Anna is in the witness box, she breaks down and reveals the true reason she filed a lawsuit. Kate asked her to do it. Kate told Anna to kill her as she hated living between the line of life and death and just wanted it to be over. that is why, Anna files a lawsuit. She also files a lawsuit partly because of her greed. but, Anna does not hate her sister, and she is not a greedy girl
In due course of the court proceedings, Anna is granted medical emancipation from her parents so that she can decide whether she wants to be a donor. also, her power of attorney is given to campbell (her lawyer) so after signing all the papers of the contract, Anna is given a lift by campbell to go home. on the ride back home, she reveals to campbell she wants to donate her kidney after all.
Ending:
unfortuntely, on the ride back home, the car Anna and Campbell are in meets with an accident. she is hospitalized. Later, the doctor says that Anna is brain dead and that there is no point in keeping her alive. Instead, they could donate her organs. Campbell, knowing that this was her last wish, agrees to it (he has the power of attorney to her medical stuff, remmber?)
So, Kate has a transplant and she makes an unexpected recovery and becomes hale and hearty.
Sad isn't it,? it is even sadder if you read the book. As you read the book, you get so close and involved with the characters. that is why everything is so sad
I seem and feel that i am strong on the outside,
but actually on the inside i am weak,
even though i can be weak sometimes,
most of the time i am strong,
heck, i don't even know who or what i am
this a random thing that came into my mind after i read the book. hope i have left you all depressed after reading this. rememer to borrow the book, okay?
